"Th-this is it." The deep voice was shaken as emerald occuli scanned the large cave before him. Perched firmly before the entrance was a large boulder, one Bullet knew he could not move if he tried. He was suddenly exasperated, and found himself shifting his weight uncomfortabley. He had to get his sister inside!
You can do it, Bullet, A soft, musical voice filled his head and he was suddenly confident. He padded forwards, his baby sister draped across his shoulders, until he was inches from the cave. Then, without even thinking about it, he lifted his paw and placed the pad of it against the cold stone.
When he replaced his mitt on the floor, the stone suddenly jumped into action. This wasn't what startled the ebony brute though. What made him jump was the fact that he wasn't startled. It was as if he had been expecting this to happen.
Shaking his head, Bullet stepped into the dark cave. More surprises. The confined space was not filled with the stench of death and decay, but rather a soft, comforting smell, which put a smile upon Bullet's lips.
After a moment, when his eyes were adjusted to the dim lighting, Bullet stepped forwards, padding further and further into the cave. He passed the dead bodies of Buck and Tundra, of Lakota, and of many other wolves who he did not know at all. Wolves of the past.
Finally, he passed a low outcropping of rock, with a fresher corpse lying on it, eyes closed, looking peaceful. Bullet blinked. It was Raif. The new wolf that had arrived with Keeper. He hadn't even known of his death.
Dipping his head, Bullet muttered a soft goodbye, then turned and continued on his quest to find Jewel a suitable resting place. After another minute of walking, he found it. A ledge of rock, much like Raif's. But there was something special about this one. Something that made it perfect. Bullet smiled and nodded. Nestled in the wall above the ledge was a tiny blue gem, which sparkled strangely in the darkness, casting a soft light upon the shelf beneath it. Bullet stepped forwards and tilted his shoulder so that his sister slipped onto her final bed. He gazed fondly down at her for a moment. Looking so content. So at peace. Then, he bent his head, licking her fondly between the ears.
"Good bye, Jewel," He murmered, then turned and trotted out of the cave. He reached the entrance, and stopped.
Good bye, Bullet. Not for ever. Bullet's auds perked, and he closed his eyes for a moment, absorbing his sister's voice. Then, he stepped from the cave. The boulder jumped into position behind him, guarding the entrance, and Bullet was gone, bounding back towards the birthing cave.
